Keeping in view the dwindling resources of petroleum oil, the need to find suitable alternatives for use in the transportation sector cannot be undermined in the present age. Therefore, experiments were conducted in M.R.E.C., Jaipur, with a view to finding the suitability of rectified spirit (containing 95 % ethanol) with a blend of 5 % petrol on a 50 cc moped. From the tests, it was established that rectified spirit is a viable alternative to gasoline and also a better fuel in certain respects than gasoline. The use of 5 % petrol can also be dispensed with, as its only function was as a solubilizer to prevent phase separation between the lubricating oil and rectified spirit. Iso-butyl alcohol or other higher alcohols can also be used as solubilizers instead.
