It is known that bearing stiffness characteristics of a power plant under operating load conditions vary as a function of crank angle and gas forces. These variations were experimentally determined and an analytical study was performed to determine the influence of such variations on passenger compartment sound quality. Research indicated that the sound quality of a power plant with lower modal density was less sensitive to bearing oil film stiffness variations and provided improvements in interior sound quality. A shell shaped power plant which provided reduced modal density was constructed and tests verified the improved performance.
