This paper presents an overview of a range of low cost automotive sensors developed by Sira Ltd for various companies. A common theme of all these sensors is the use of optical or electromechanical techniques, which are of particular advantage in the harsh automotive environment. Such measuring techniques tend to be inherently immune to electromagnetic interference, are more robust than related sensors that rely on moving mechanical parts, and can be implemented using the wide range of low cost components that modern technology is making available to the market place.
