The experience made with sealants and adhesives in a wide range of body-in-white (BIW) applications to date has led the automotive industry to investigate adhesive bonding as a load bearing joining technique. The reasons and objectives of this development are outlined. The requirements on structural adhesives and their mechanical performance are discussed. Finally a status is given on achievements together with areas, on which work is still required in order to use structrural adhesives for load-bearing joints in automotive BIW-applications.
