The scope for growth of structural plastics composites in the automotive industry is currently limited by the lack of a fully developed manufacturing route that will permit cost effective production at high volume. High Speed Resin Transfer Moulding has been highlighted by Ford as a potential route to manufacturing a wide range of composite automotive components at volume. This paper will explain the rationale and describes some aspects of the work to develop the process for a component with both structural and surface finish requirements.
