The application of load-sensing (LS) hydrostatic steering systems has become more and more important in mobile vehicles because of their low energy consumption. A LS-system is a volume flow and pressure controlled system with either a variable displacement pump or a fixed displacement pump combined with a constant pressure drop valve. A LS-hydrostatic steering system can be seen as a closed loop control system. A slow pump control or a bad adjustment of the components would lead to a peak in the steering wheel torque during the initial steering action. Theoretical and experimental work is done to investigate the dynamic behaviour and specifically the response of the steering to a ramp or step input for several design and working parameters. Further experimental work is done to investigate the acceleration and speed of the steering wheel at different driving situations. The aim of the investigation is to analyse the hydrostatic steering and to give detailed background for the design and development of hydrostatic steerings.
