Natural gas liquefaction plant design feed gas compositions frequently differ from pipeline supplier's specifications, particularly with respect to the maximum allowable carbon dioxide concentrations. Expansion turbines utilizing dry, carbon dioxide containing natural gas as the working fluid to generate refrigeration are acutely sensitive to carbon dioxide content variations as plant design concentrations are approached or exceeded. The effects of various feed gas compositions on expansion turbines are discussed. Particular attention is focused on the maximum allowable carbon dioxide concentration before continued turbine operation becomes impractical or potentially damaging to the equipment. New operating parameters are developed for a given application to maximize refrigeration production and minimize potential equipment damage.
