A modal analysis methodology is described for multi-degree-of-freedom articulated off-road vehicles and machinery. An analytical technique formulates the eigenvalue problem for linearized, constrained dynamical systems consisting of rigid and flexible links during steady-state motion or at a static equilibrium position. This methodology permits simultaneously modelling the rigid body and flexible modes of vibration from passive springs and dampers and any linear continuous time control systems. The methodology is illustrated with the finite element model of a wheel loader and its implement mechanism. The flexible loader linkage is considered to evaluate the effect of using a hydraulic control system on the loader mechanism. An eigendata sensitivity analysis is performed to provide and optimize the dynamic structural characteristics to eliminate any instability characteristics that may occur the vehicle is performing its loading functions.
