Lean operation in spark ignition is known to decrease exhaust emission while maintaining good fuel economy. However, due to the limitation in use of very lean mixture, researchers are devoting their efforts to investigate aspects of the cause of misfire. This paper describes the establishment of the data acquisition system and instrumentation on a test bed engine to monitor the combustion phenomenon in a lean burn situation. The generated data from the system will be essential for the extension of combustion modelling on flame propagation into this area. The engine is to be modified to run on cylinders 1 and 4 in which number 4 is instrumented for the study. A pressure transducer located in the cylinder head and a laser based flame tracking system are both interfaced with a computer controlled data logging and analysis system. A hot wire anemometry system is used to study the turbulent flow conditions and the swirl motion in the combustion chamber in a separate dummy cylinder. The system is designed to capture and correlate the experimental data from which a lean burn criteria will be evaluated at a later stage.
