The ZA alloys are beginning to find their place in the automotive industry. Several applications, which in the past may have been fabricated from such materials as cast iron, steel, bronze or forged aluminum are now ZA die castings. Some ZA applications have replaced conventional zinc or aluminum die castings which, due to new performance demands, might have otherwise required expensive redesign or been respecified into competitive manufacturing processes. ZA alloys provide a new means for the transportation industry to meet its goals of performance improvement and cost reduction. This paper presents a review of several automotive ZA applications in terms of these considerations.
