This paper describes FACTS, an on-going effort examining the application potential of six emergingly technologies: fiber-optic sensors, gallium arsenide and very high-speed integrated circuits (VHSIC), high-temperature electronics, parallel processing using VHSIC technology, electrical power drive and actuation, and composite materials. These technologies a considered candidates for application to the control and accessory systems of future aircraft turbine engines. FACTS will identify pertinent aspects of the technologies and assess their present state of development. The study will establish a technology development roadmap that will guide future government and industry investments in research and development. Specifically addressed in this paper are the six technologies and the bases for their selection. It also identifies the study teams and provides preliminary technical findings.
