An upgrading exercise may take place under three circumstances. It may be a straightforward communications upgrade where there is already an existing 30 pair cable in situ. It may be carried out as part of a road widening contract when the communications are also re-equipped with a new cable infrastructure and new equipment. It may be an interim upgrade which takes place when an existing 20 pair installation is to be temporally used to operate a restricted NMCS2 service. These three possibilities are dealt with.
