In understanding EMC in vehicles it is necessary to review briefly the external and internal environment. The external environment is either a test environment or an environment typical of road conditions. Examples of the former are EMC compliance tests in screened or anechoic rooms. The internal environment of the car can be described as a leaky metal cavity loaded with a variety of materials, e.g. engine parts, seating, driver, passengers etc. Numerical simulation techniques are the only approach capable of offering an overall picture of electromagnetic interactions in the complex car environment. A powerful numerical technique used for this purpose is described followed by some of the results.
