The development of a drive system for a battery fed underground mining locomotive and squirrel cage induction motor is described. The inverter, microprocessor and controller are all totally enclosed and the electronics is hermetically sealed against the harsh mining environment. This drive system is shortly being installed in a mining locomotive to undergo track tests. Load tests and heat runs have shown the thermal design to be adequate.
