Three areas of automative research that have not resulted in accepted technology in the US are examined, namely, alternative engines, automatic traffic control, and continuously variable transmission. The alternative engine contenders discussed are the diesel, heat engines, and two-cycle spark ignition engines. Two automated traffic control systems are described: the British system, called Scoot, and an Australian system called Scats. The present status of continuously-variable-transmission technology is briefly examined.
