The future of weapon systems development is predicted, and its implications for avionics acquisition are examined. The need for long development cycles and long service lives for modern weapon systems is discussed in the context of those factors that make these goals difficult to achieve. The problems of 'requirements creep' and obsolescence are considered. Some approaches for contending with these problems are suggested.
