An evaluation was conducted on the performance of 1.3 microns, fiber optic system components in conditions which would indicate their viability for use in spacecraft applications. The replacement of copper based cabling with fiber optics has occurred rapidly in ground based systems, but their use in commercial or military space is extremely rare or non-existent. The commercially procured system components evaluated in this study would be applicable for use in medium to low data rate (150 Mbaud/s or less) digital onboard communication systems. The evaluation shows good promise for the early use of fiber optic systems which require low to medium link lengths between terminating stations, such as ring based local area networks.
