The material development program undertaken to produce a suitable cable sheathing compound for the Channel Tunnel, is described. Modifications to the filler are discussed, together with the selection of a new crystalline polymer base, which resulted in a new material having greatly improved physical properties. The use of low smoke and fume compounds in the acrylic resin joint shell is outlined, together with design modification necessary to improve dimensional rigidity and fire performance. The results of this work demonstrated the suitability of new cable and joint designs for use in the Channel Tunnel.
