Digital technology and computer-type programmability dominate the signal processing and control of modern multimode airborne radar systems. This evolved because of the need to use varied and complex algorithms to implement the different radar modes and the need to develop equipment concurrently with the development of system algorithms and application software specifications. Additionally, programmable signal processing technology enables system changes during flight testing, later enhancements to deployed radars and technology upgrades over the life of the system. This paper describes a Programmable Signal Processor (PSP) for an airborne multimode radar system that is currently in flight test. The equipment design, technology used, and software to support the development of application programs are described. Also described are the results of a study to upgrade the technology while maintaining software and system compatibility.
