The adoption of power electronic traction equipment in new railways or for replacement of existing stock has led to increased awareness of the possibility of adverse interaction between power supply/traction equipment and the signalling system. Signal interference tests are now important components of acceptance tests for new traction, signalling or supply equipment. Testing is normally a two stage process. This paper describes a measurement system which can carry out the Fourier Transform processing and transducer calibration scaling on-line as the test proceeds, in addition to normal off-line processing. Thus the number of tests can be minimised and tests themselves can be more productive due to the ease with which specific conditions can be identified as giving rise to maximum interference.
