The methods described above are based on those which have been established for testing of relay systems used for railway signalling applications. This has been possible because for the following reasons: The railway signalling system is basically a simple Boolean logic operation, for which a relatively simple simulation under manual control can provide a very close equivalent to real operation. There are established procedures for testing against a formal specification (the signalling control tables). These already treat the interlocking as a 'black box', and so are equally applicable to relay or software based systems. The SSI system, while revolutionary in terms of equipment design, is essentially evolutionary in terms of the function being carried out, as the primary motive for its development has been economic rather than an attempt to carry out new functions which would not have been possible with a non-software system.
