High performance competition engines present particular and difficult challenges for electronic engine management systems. This paper describes those challenges and outlines the strategies and technology which have been incorporated in a range of custom and general engine management systems for this demanding market. In particular it concentrates on the features of the 'Lucas 468' system which has been developed as a general system suitable for a wide range of engine configurations. The benefits of full sequential and synchronised fuel injection and ignition control are discussed along with their associated difficulties. The paper also illustrates how on-board diagnostics and fault tolerant features have been incorporated into the system. A description of a novel telemetry system for continuous remote monitoring of engine parameters is also included.
