The ThyssenKrupp project InCarplus was started in 2011. The aim of the project was to investigate and develop new products and production technologies for the automotive industry. Due to new and expected upcoming government regulations in different countries and the broad public discussion regarding the emission of carbon dioxide, new approaches had to be developed to meet the requirements of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to reduce the weight of future automobiles. For this reason the sub-projects "Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Lightweight Steering Column" and "CFRP ultra-lightweight damper" were initiated in order to develop lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastic components for the chassis module. There were two key aspects to the projects: Firstly, to reduce the weight of the components and secondly to provide the customer with a cost-effective CFRP production process.
