Lightweight design on the basis of fiber-based materials is an increasingly attractive alternative to metal-based lightweight design on the basis of aluminum or magnesium alloys. In view of the very high expectations made of these lightweighting variants it appears prudent to take a critical look at the current situation and also the underlying requirements. This contribution examines aspects of the production and structure of high-performance fibers, thermoplastic and thermoset matrixes, and questions regarding fiber-matrix adhesion.
