Transmissions for aircraft have to fulfil special requirements. Besides low weight, high speed and power rating, high reliability and safe operation under all conditions are part of these requirements. Because of the high importance of the transmissions for the safe operation of the aircraft, design and development is ruled by air law, where the requirements for each type of aircraft are given by the so-called Certification Specifications. These specifications (CS by EASA resp. FAR by FAA) do not only require theoretical calculations, but also experimental proof of design. This paper gives an overview of the major transmission types for aircraft and shows at the example of helicopter transmissions which design and development steps are necessary. It shows the design aspects for the transmission elements and its potential for optimization. One chapter deals with air law and the consequences for the design and qualification process. As Vienna University of Technology works in the field of transmissions for aircraft, activities and capabilities are described. Finally some examples of transmissions are presented.
