The article explains the relation between the air drag and the fuel consumption, including the effects of the wind and the drive cycle. This leads to the focus on the aerodynamics of long haul transport trucks, dominated by tractor/ semi-trailer configurations, and the importance of situations with non-zero yaw angles. Together with the determination of most important aerodynamic areas, this forms a solid basis for the aerodynamic optimization of the new DAF XF Euro 6 truck. Results of CFD simulations are shown, explaining the design of the new roof spoiler and the flow around the corner deflectors.
