As a result of the study on the effect of coating formulation on crack resistance of epoxy coatings for ballast tank, the following conclusions were made; 1. Superior elongation and flexibility of epoxy coating can be obtained by the introduction of high molecular weight resin and amide type curing agent, which lower the crosslink density and increase chain flexibility and mobility. 2. Elongation of coatings was dramatically affected by the type of pigments because of the immobilization of resin molecules induced by interaction between pigments and resins. Coatings with silica had the highest elongation to break while coatings with zinc oxide had the lowest elongation to break. 3. Elongation capability of coating was increased slightly as pigment particle size was decreased. It was also found that the effect of pigment shape on the elongation of coatings was negligible. 4. Greater solvent content in the coatings might lead to greater internal stress and would reduce the elongation to break of coatings.
