Reducing the complexity of vehicle testing and acceptance procedures across Europe offers significant savings which will make the rail sector more competitive. A first step is to formalise the equivalence between European and national rules, and to simplify their structure to minimise any overlaps or duplication. By the end of this year, the European Railway Agency is due to publish its final Report on Vehicle Authorisation processes and a Reference Document which cross-references national rules for vehicle authorisation. This is a major step in the drive to streamline authorisation processes for the placing into service of railway vehicles within the European Union, brought about by the recast Interoperability Directive.
