Recent amendments to the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) convention make it possible to use fire safety engineering (FSE) to demonstrate that an alternative design reaches a sufficient safety level compared to a prescriptive design. The objective of the MP08 Project is to validate a FSE methodology based on IMO (International Maritime Organisation) guidelines in order to enable shipyards to use composites for applications where they are not used for the moment because of prescriptive regulations in force. Within the application of this method, MP08 uses both risk-based and performance-based approaches in order to define critical scenarios and to find acceptable first principle tools that could guaranty a safety level of designs in composite equivalent to designs in steel. The FSE methodology requires validated simulation tools. A pyrolysis model and a thermo-mechanical model are developed. As far as the thermomechanical model is concerned, we can now compute the behaviour of metallic stiffened bulkheads and decks, loaded or not, protected by a rockwool layer or not, submitted to normalized furnace fire on one side or the other. The numerical results are in good agreement with test results, even when total collapse occurs. The pyrolysis model is presented in another paper at this conference. Another important part of the work carried out in the MP08 project concerns the development of new active systems. The investigation of film cooling and air curtain based techniques is in progress.
