The paper presents a systematic approach for optimization of switched reluctance machines (SRM) under current PWM control strategy. For this purpose, novel synthesis algorithms are developed based on the two sets of key curves obtained from several dynamic analyses of SRMs. In the optimization process, all operating points of the machine are taken into account to evaluate the overall efficiency using a fuzzy optimization technique. The proposed approach is applied to an example and a constructed prototype and the optimum design are compared in terms of efficiency. The results show a considerable energy saving for the optimum design when it is operated as electric vehicle propulsion under the standard heavy-duty FTP (federal test procedure) transient driving cycle.
