Due to the introduction of the European Norm 15227, the crash safety requirements, specifically the ability of a train to handle a collision have increased. Voith Turbo Scharfenberg has developed an energy absorber which can be mounted between a UIC (Union International de Chemin der Fer)buffer and a rail vehicle. At a trigger force of approximately 2000kN the mean force level amounts to 1900kN. When combined with a crashworthy UIC category C buffer energy absorption of more than 1 MJ per buffer system is possible, without intruding into the underframe. Originally designed for locomotives, the energy absorber can also be used for other vehicles like freight cars.
