Currently, ultrasonic method is applied for measuring burning rates of the solid propellants, since it can measure burning rates as a function of pressure in a single test performed under a constant volume condition. However, to replace the stand burner method (which is widely adopted as a standard technique) by the ultrasonic method, it is necessary to verify of its accuracy and reliability. So, in this study, we investigated the performance of the ultrasonic method for burning rate measurements by comparison to the strand burner results. The ultrasonic measurement system used in this study can acquire full A-scan waveforms together with pressure values in a real time fashion. Furthermore, we adopted attenuations and sound velocities of the solid propellants to investe the sources of data scattering in measured burning rates using the ultrasonic method. In this paper, the performance of the ultrasonic method and the relation between the attenuations and data scattering in the measured burning rates are presented.
