Fire can be considered one of the dominant issues in preventing the many advantages of composites from being extensively used by the Navy. Over the years many different resin systems have been tried in dealing with this issue with limited success in various areas of ship. The system now being used for composites in load bearing applications incorporates a passive fire protection system over the composite to protect it from the fire. This technique for protecting the composite requires additional thickness around the composite for the passive fire protection, additional labor for installing the protection and additional cost for the protection itself. A composite system that could function in a load bearing application without a passive fire protection system would offer a much improved system that should advance the use of composites on ships.
