The steering wheel torque is a very important factor for the steering feel of a vehicle. In order to investigate the steering wheel torque a new generic simulation model was developed for a hydraulic assisted steering system embedded in a vehicle handling model. The key requirements were high accuracy prediction of steering torque and fast computation time. For that purpose new friction elements were developed. In order to succeed, a smart implementation in the vehicle model was also very important. The validation of the model showed a very good correlation of steering wheel torque and vehicle response with the in-car measurements. The described model is perfectly suited for investigating parameters affecting the steering wheel torque and vehicle handling interactions.
