This paper describes a lane keeping assistant system (LKAS) and its effects on driving behavior. LKAS shows promise in reducing the workload on the driver. To ensure that the driver can be in control of the vehicle at all times, the maximum corrective steering torque has to be limited. Appropriate torque levels were experimentally determined. A variation of the system, the Haptic-LKAS, eliminates the risk of automatic driving (i.e. the driver relying too much on the system), but at the same time still provides support by giving feedback on the vehicle position in the lane. A more complex torque control, taking into account the steering angle in addition to lane position is expected to further increase the performance of the above systems.
