Die Odenwaldbahn erschließt weite Teile Südosthessens und bindet sie an die Oberzentren im Rhein-Main-Gebiet an. Der Einzugsbereich der Odenwaldbahn umfaßt neben dem Odenwaldkreis die östlichen Teile des Landkreises Darmstadt-Dieburg und des Kreises Offenbach sowie die Städte Darmstadt und Hanau mit zusammen über einer halben Million Einwohner. Von Beginn an wurde das Projekt Odenwaldbahn nicht alleine als eine Infrastrukturmaßnahme, sondern als eine Gesamtkonzeption zur Entwicklung der Region gesehen. Das Maßnahmenbündel umfaßt, neben der Modernisierung und dem Ausbau der Streckeninfrastruktur, die Erweiterung des Linienangebotes und Fahrplanangebotes, den Einsatz neuer Fahrzeuge, den Ausbau aller Stationen bis hin zu Bahnhofsumfeldgestaltungen sowie den Neubau zweier zusätzlicher Haltepunkte in Darmstadt an der Technischen Universität und nahe der Gustav-Hacker-Siedlung in Groß Umstadt Nord. Neben der Erschließung zusätzlicher Fahrgastpotentiale werden mit der attraktiveren Gestaltung der Bahnstrecken positive Wirkungen für eine verbesserte Raumpolitik und Siedlungspolitik erwartet. Das Angebotskonzept sieht fünf aufeinander abgestimmte Linien vor.

The Odenwaldbahn is a railway which serves large parts of the southeast of the German federal state of Hessen and connects them with the big regional centres of the Rhine-Main conurbation. The catchment area of the Odenwaldbahn includes the territories of the Odenwaldkreis, the eastern parts of the Landkreis of Darmstadt-Dieburg and the municipal territories of Offenbach, Darmstadt and Hanau. The total population inhabiting this region is more than half a million. An entirely new concept has now been developed, including a new, extended programme of services based on an integral fixed-headway timetable with fast interchanges to connecting services. The package of measures includes the modernisation of the railway infrastructure, higher speeds, deployment of new trains, upgrading of all routes, improvements in and around stations including the complete rebuilding of two stations and a new loop line just outside of Darmstadt, so that direct trains between Frankfurt am Main Hauptbahnhof and the Odenwald do not need to stop in Darmstadt and reverse there.
