Der Eisenbahnknoten Frankfurt/M Sportfeld befindet sich im südlichen Stadtgebiet von Frankfurt am Main. Der Bahnhof Sportfeld, neuer Namen Frankfurt/M Stadion, ist mit werktäglich etwa 600 Zugfahrten einer der am stärksten belasteten Knoten der Deutschen Bahn AG. Dieser Bahnhof liegt in unmittelbarer Nähe des neu gebauten Stadions Commerzbank Arena und ist damit die ideale Station für den Zugang zu den in Frankfurt stattfindenden Weltmeisterschaftsspielen. Aktuellen Ansprüchen genügt der Knoten nicht mehr. Rechtzeitig zum Beginn der Fußballweltmeisterschaft 2006 wird die neue Verkehrsstation den Gästen aus aller Welt zur Verfügung stehen. Der betriebliche Nutzen der ersten Ausbaustufe wird voraussichtlich ein Jahr später mit Realisierung des neuen Spurplans erreicht. Um die zusätzlichen Kapazitäten insgesamt nutzen zu können, ist aber ein weitergehender Ausbau der Gleisanlagen erforderlich. Als weiterer Engpaß haben die betriebswissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen die Mainquerung identifiziert. Es müssen sich daher weitere Ausbaustufen im im Sinne des Gesamtkonzepts anschließen.

The Stadion station is built on a railway junction in the southern outskirts of Frankfurt am Main. With around six hundred train movements a day on weekdays, it is one of the most heavily trafficked junctions on the network operated by Deutsche Bahn, and all the tracks are at the same level. The major long-distance traffic flows are north/south (Kassel-Frankfurt-Mannheim-Stuttgart/Karlsruhe) and east/west (Fulda/Wurzburg-Frankfurt-Cologne). The station is only a stone's throw from the newly rebuilt Commerzbank Arena football ground and is thus the ideal alighting point for anyone attending those World Cup games that are to be played in Frankfurt. The layout of the mainline tracks has hardly been modified since the region's first railways were built about 150 years ago. The only noteworthy change was the addition of two tracks at the time the S-Bahn system was built. Given the extremely dense traffic, which is forecast to increase still further, and the timetabling constraints resulting from the overall programme of operations, it has become clear that the junction must be significantly realigned. This measure is absolutely essential for ensuring operational and timetable stability at the junction itself and also on the lines leading to and from it. Not long before the first World Cup game is played in Frankfurt, the new passenger facilities are to be inaugurated for visitors from all around the world. The operational benefits of the first upgrading stage will probably come a year later, with the completion of the new track layout. Further track-upgrading measures are going to be necessary after that if optimum use is to be made of the additional capacity.
