This paper introduces a newly developed optical submarine cable design suitable for applications requiring electrical power feeding, such as short regional repeatered systems and nontelecommunication applications like oceanographic sensing, which is also suitable for repeaterless system applications. The main targets of this development were to meet the strong demand for a cable design featuring a short lead time, high fiber counts (for repeaterless systems), and overall low cost while retaining robustness compatible with current cable handling and laying equipment. To accomplish these goals, the design was optimized around a loose structure based on copper tube manufacturing technology. The newly developed cable and its related joint box have been thoroughly evaluated under strict specifications to deliver the highest standards of quality and reliability for both present and future market needs.
