Orpheus is an offshore safety system developed by QinetiQ's Sea divison to provide clear and concise information on how a ship-shaped vessel will perform in a variety of heavy weather scenarios. The MS Window based system combines real-time information with a database of previously generated data which, when selected, is plotted to a computer screen in a simple-to-use format. The main advantage of the operator guidance system is that it provides bridge officers with the means to quantify the risks to a ship in extreme weather conditions. It also allows officers to increase the operational envelope or improve operational safety of shipboard tasks that are normally hampered, or even postponed, by the presence of harsh weather conditions.
