This study presents an Hinfinity-based robust control design for an active automobile suspension system and compares its performance with a previously designed robust LQG (Linear Quadratic Gaussian) controller and a well tuned PI controller from contemporary literature. The robustness of the controller designs is assessed by performing micro analysis of the closed loop system. The Hinfinity problem is formulated as a stacked nominal performance problem. The results obtained in this study are very encouraging. The Hinfinity control design conducted in this research was compared to a previously designed robust LQG controller and a well tuned PI controller from contemporary literature. After a detailed analysis of performance and robustness characteristics of all the controllers, the following conclusions can be made: 1. Both LQG and Hinfinity control designs have superior robustness properties to the well-tuned PI controller. 2. Since, the Hinfinity controller achieves the maximum reduction in acceleration transmissibility, which is one of the main measures for judging passenger comfort, it can be concluded that the Hinfinity controller is able to achieve a higher level of passenger comfort. 3. The Hinfinity controller not only shows superior performance enhancement and robustness but also demands comparable actuation power and hence has good potential for implementation on the real-life system. The present study also provides motivation and hope for persuing other robust control designs like DK-iteration and Glover McFarlane Hinfinity loop shaping designs to see which one of them suits the best for the application in hand. All the above mentioned controllers can subsequently be used to meet other performance requirements like reducing wheel hopping, Improve ride handling qualities amongst others.
