As assembly planning bridges the gap between product design and production, it represents a high potential for improvement and time reduction within the product development process. Thus, the paper deals with a new approach towards integrating product design and assembly planning using assembly features to upgrade the product model by additional assembly-relevant information. Furthermore, a preliminary implementation of assembly features in the widely-used CAD system CATIA V5 and the digital planning software DPE that represents a core part of the digital production planning in several companies of the automotive industry is presented. In this context, the integration of product design and assembly planning represents an additional step towards the realization of the Digital Factory.
