Proton exchange membranes Fuel Cell (PEMFC) are one of the most promising onboard power generators for low emission traction vehicles. This paper presents the first experimental results on the PEMFC testing bench of the French SPACT project (Fuel Cell Systems for Transportation Applications). A Fuel Cell (FC) test platform has been installed in Belfort, France which is especially dedicated to test Fuel Cell systems and carry out investigations on the Fuel Cell stack. The Fuel Cell testing bench should reproduce in a laboratory the transportation working conditions of a road or railway vehicle. Today only a 5 kW Fuel Cell stack is investigated. This stack is fed by pure hydrogen gas and compressed air and is fully instrumented. The first step of the project is to characterize the 5 kW Fuel Cell Generator for static and dynamic load conditions. In order to allow this Fuel Cell characterization a 5 to 10 kW electronic active load has been designed and realized at the INRETS LTN laboratory in cooperation with the GREEN laboratory of Nancy. The second step will focus on the impact of the power electronic load converters on the Fuel Cell behaviour for transportation constraints. The authors today obtained the first experimental results for powers up to 5 kW with the testing bench in static and dynamic load conditions. Test results of the influence of the harmonic current due to the interface with the power electronic converters on the Fuel Cell will be included in the paper.
