In the rail industry pressure tightness is used on all high speed trains to ensure a good pressure comfort when travelling through tunnels. There are difficulties to relate a given pressure tightness to a single value with the time constant and equivalent leakage area. It is even more difficult to compare values with the two different measures. The discrepancies with the two existing measures of air tightness, time constant and equivalent leakage area are shown. The reason is that they model two different types of leaks, both existing on a train. The effect of elastic deformation of the carbody is highlighted. A more advanced model and a new procedure is put forward. Specific standardised tests are suggested and how to determine the relevant model parameters from these. Reference to time constant and equivalent leakage area can still be made by linking these to certain reference levels of pressure difference.
