Wear-fatigue interaction is important in determining the life of components which undergo both processes simultaneously, but for which neither process is guaranteed to dominate. Wear and fatigue are coupled primarily through crack truncation by wear, but also through ''the cross actions'' of solutions to one or other of the problems, e.g. oil applied to reduce wear may accelerate crack growth through internal fluid pressurisation of the crack. Controlled increases in wear offer the possibility of extending the fatigue life of a component through truncation of small surface breaking cracks. Although in subsequent operation it will not be possible to operate at the theoretical maximum life of the component, it is possible to ensure that failure will eventually be by wear (an easily detected, and therefore relatively safe failure) rather than by fatigue failure crack growth, which is often undetected unit rapid final failure.
