A unique, fully automated test station is described which is intended for testing the trolley wire resistance to abrasive wear while in contact with a pantograph in simulated operating conditions. The station has three drive and control types: electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic. The station is used for cyclic testing of trolley wires, in accordance with the approved procedures. Testing involves measurement and recording of the following basic parameters: rotational speed of the wheel, current intensity, temperature of the trolley wire, wearing of the wire surface, pantograph clamping force and vibrations of the testing station measured in order to ensure its correct performance. Accordingly, the number of wheel revolutions (i.e. pantograph travels) per unit cross-section of the trolley wire is the measure of the wire wearing. The control and measuring system is described, which allows for automatic operation of the station, measurements, recording and archiving of the results in digital format. During the tests some emergency conditions might arise, which ought to be detected by the measurement and control system. The emergency conditions occur e.g., when rotational speed of the wheel exceeds its preset value beyond the admissible tolerance levels or trolley wires or some test stand components get overheated contact between the wire and the pantograph, etc.
