Because of their simplicity and performances capacitive sensors are perfectly fit for advance air bag applications. They can give information about the position of the passenger by correctly distributing them in the vehicle seat. It has been shown that their measurements can be rendered independent from the distance that separates them from the passenger. Therefore, they can be used as well to evaluate the passenger morphology independently from its clothing, seat accessories or how much the seat foam is worn. As the distance correction can be performed on each individual sensor, they can simply be used to replace the former distance dependant sensors as those formerly used in BIOVOLUME without requiring to modify the decision algorithms.
