A self-isolated surge protection IC fitted in SSOP-36 for the switch interface of automotive ECUs has been presented. This surge protection IC is monolithically integrated with fourteen channel-input power Zener diodes having very high surge -absorption capability and the NMOS level-shift and buffer circuits. The ESD capability of more than +/- 25 kV in the condition of 150 pF - 150 ohms for each input terminal have been achieved by optimization of the power Zener diode rated 60 V. By using our surge protection IC, the mounting area of the surge protection circuits on the printed-circuit board can be saved by 80 % when compared with the conventional resistorand capacitor-chip circuits rated 25 kV at 150 pF - 150 ohms ESD test. Total cost of ECUs can be cut down and sufficient ESD capability is provided for the switch interface of automotive ECUs.
