Examples of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) used in highly loaded journal bearings of pumps, in high temperature bearings for space re-entry vehicles and under cryogenic conditions demonstrate a new level of performance, which was impossible to reach with conventional ceramics. This was possible due to the high fracture toughness, the excellent elongation capability and extreme thermal shock resistance of fiber-reinforced ceramics. As such, excellent wear results and good tribological behavior were observed and the potential of this class of materials was by far not yet clear, since a large variety of parameters of this material can be changed and adapted to many potential tribological applications.
