Increasing demands on weight, safety and cost, have led to a rapid development in car body engi-neering. A number of new materials are being investigated, especially steels of greater and greater strength. Joining is one of the key processes in car body manufacturing and the 'joinability' of the different materials considered must be rigor-ously assessed. An overview of steels for car bodies and joining methods is discussed followed by examples of joint properties. (Copyright 2003 Stahlinstitut VDEh)
