The CVT vehicle, dynamometer and bench test data presented above suggest the following findings: (A) Even under severe test conditions, there appears to be only a difference in fluid shear stress between the Nissan Bluebird CVT and the GM 4L60 automatic transmission, regarding their effects on the two transmission fluids used in the study. (B) Two conventional ATFs (Automatic Transmission Fluids), formulated by this laboratory and designed not for a CVT but solely for DEXRON IIIG and MERCON performance, allowed the CVT of the '98 Nissan Bluebird to function well under severe dynamometer test conditions. (C) On the ability of steel-on-steel friction bench tests to predict push-belt CVT dynamometer (friction) results, limited success was obtained with the Falex block-on-ring apparatus, while slightly better results were achieved with the SRV rig. The distinctions made by the CVT dynamometer test, among fluids offering moderate levels of friction (torque transmittance), were not apparent in the SSF bench tests results. More advanced modeling approaches may be necessary to better predict fluid performance in the push-belt CVT.
